"Homer Wells wants to be neither an orphan nor an abortionist. But he has little choice in either matter; failing to be adopted, he is fated to always return to Maine's Saint Cloud's Orphanage and his surrogate father, Dr. Larch, head administrator and resident abortionist. Although still in his teens, Homer learns 'perfect obstetrical procedure' while assisting Larch, but his unwillingness to perform abortions eventually leads him away from Saint Cloud's and into a head-on collision with life." What We Said
John Irving is one of our favorite authors. We've read 3 of his books (also A Prayer For Owen Meany and A Widow For One Year). This was the first we read, and perhaps that's why it is my favorite. I loved Homer Wells. I loved all the characters (even those that are dislikable), and the plot twists. We couldn't even cover all of them in our discussion, much less the deeper issues of abortion vs. adoption, love, sacrifice, rules, relationships, etc. I laughed, I cried. It was a refreshing experience, both sweet and tart.

Heather, 10/17/2004 5 stars!
The Cider House Rules is such an amazing, heart-warming novel. Irving is definately one of the best story tellers at work today, he makes the novel come to life with his knowledge and wit.
Inspired food accompaniment: nothing! I just wanted to read until i was finished.
Other suggested books/authors: Everything by Irving is fabulous.

First published in 1985, The Cider House Rules is John Irving's sixth novel. Set in rural Maine in the first half of this century, it tells the story of Dr. Wilbur Larch - saint and obstetrician, founder and director of the orphanage in the town of St. Cloud's, ether addict and abortionist. It is also the story of Dr. Larch's favorite orphan, Homer Wells, who is never adopted.
