Saboteurs: The Nazi Raid on America
By Michael Dobbs

Published in 2004

Featured book published by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.
Hardcover: 336 pages
ISBN: 0375414703

Secretive men infiltrating the United States? Plots of terror and destruction on American soil? A military tribunal? No, Dobbs' latest book is not a contemporary look at our post-9/11 world, but rather an excavation of past horrors. Dobbs revisits the story of eight German agents who, armed with explosives and money, landed on the East Coast in June 1942. The plan -- hatched by Hitler after America's entry into the war -- entailed the saboteurs spreading out into the country to blow up defense plants, bridges, and railroads. But the mission quickly derailed, and the saboteurs were tried, jailed, and some were executed. Although "Operation Pastorius" failed, it provides one of those chilling "what if" scenarios.

About Michael Dobbs

Michael Dobbs’ first novel, House of Cards, launched the career of the villainous Francis Urquhart, one of the most memorable fictional characters of recent years, who was immortalized by Ian Richardson in three award-winning BBC TV series. His books have foretold the downfall of Prime Ministers and the growing turmoil within the Royal Family. His recent novels, featuring Tom Goodfellowe, are Goodfellowe MP, The Buddha of Brewer Street, and Whispers of Betrayal, which with eerie prescience ahead of September 11th told of how a small group of trained and motivated people could hold an entire city to ransom.
He was both Chief of Staff and Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party and has a doctorate in defence studies. He has also been Deputy Chairman of Saatchi and Saatchi and a regular presenter of BBC TV’s ‘Despatch Box’. He is currently a judge of the Whitbread Book of the Year Award.

From Library Journal

A reporter for the Washington Post, Dobbs (Madeleine Albright: A Twentieth Century Odyssey) draws on "a treasure trove" of 40 boxes of FBI records to document the story of eight Nazi saboteurs, deposited by U-boats on Long Island and on the coast of northern Florida in June 1942. Operation Pastorius, the elaborately planned two-year operation targeting American defense-related industries, was discovered and thwarted only because two of the invaders-Ernst Burger and George Dasch-sabotaged their own mission. Their recantation enabled the FBI and Hoover to turn the failed mission into what commentator Walter Winchell called "the most exciting achievement yet of John Edgar Hoover's G-men." Of particular interest to current readers is Dobbs's closing speculation that "the most obvious flaw" in the Nazi operation was "the lack of ideological commitment and cohesion among its principal protagonists"-unlike the commitment exhibited by the 9/11 hijackers. Dobbs suggests that until Osama bin Laden's "myth" of militant Islamic fundamentalism is discredited, "it will remain a rallying point for the resentful and the deprived." A real-life wartime thriller recommended for all … with an interest in World War II. - Robert C. Jones. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
