Monte Cristo Sandwich
wuthering bites image

Notes and tips: An American variation of the croque monsieur, a grilled cheese sandwich traditionally filled with ham and gruyère. Dip it in a mixture of egg and milk, fry it in butter, and voilà! The monte cristo is born! To make the experience complete, serve with a side of jelly for dipping. Makes 1 sandwich.

2 slices bread
butter
1 oz cooked turkey breast, thinly sliced
1 oz ham, thinly sliced
2 slices swiss or gruyère cheese
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 T milk
clarified butter or vegetable oil for frying

Add enough clarified butter or oil to a small frying pan so that it will come halfway up the sandwich. Pre-heat to 375°.

Meanwhile, butter one side of each slice of bread. Arrange meat on buttered side of one slice, top with cheese, then second slice of bread, buttered side down.

Whisk egg and milk together until combined. Dip sandwich in batter, allowing batter to fully moisten bread.

Add sandwich to pan, and fry on both sides until golden brown. Drain on paper towel and serve immediately.
