Just Kids
By Patti Smith

Featured book published in 2010

By HarperCollins Publishers
Hardcover: 278 pages
ISBN: 006621131X

It was the summer Coltrane died, the summer of love and riots, and the summer when a chance encounter in Brooklyn led two young people on a path of art, devotion, and initiation. Patti Smith would evolve as a poet and performer, and Robert Mapplethorpe would direct his highly provocative style toward photography. Just Kids serves as a salute to New York City during the late sixties and seventies and to its rich and poor, its hustlers and hellions.

What We Said

My book club was pretty well split on this one with equal numbers giving it a thumbs-up, thumbs-down and thumbs-sideways. Those who did not care for it basically did not feel anything for the characters or story. The writing was a little too matter-of-fact and non-emotional. Those who loved it were inspired by the story of these starving artists who were indeed just kids, and truly went for their dreams and were successful and rewarded by their choices. -Sue
